Jane Eyre  As adapted by Richard Rose- Presented at The Barter Theatre in the fall of 2006. Scenery Design is by Richard Finkelstein. The production was directed by Richard Rose, with Costumes by Amanda Aldridge, and Lighting Design by E. Tonry Lathroum

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte adapted by Richard Rose at Barter Theatre. Scenery design is by Richard Finkelstein Designer Statement:

To Director/Adaptor, Richard Rose, this work of literature is about "opening doors". To this end he suggested a minimal set, with three vital elements: A door which would roam the stage serving as the portal to both the exterior and interior scenes; a shadow box/screen on which the more fantastical imagery would be played and through which the secret room would be revealed in the end; and a second door, hanging in limbo, which would eventually prove to be the portal into the secret room and the secret reaches of Jane's own psyche.

As this was to be a presentational piece, and quite episodic, to reflect the book, the setting made no pretense at being "real", but rather reflected a feeling of fragmented memory. As the synapses join together in the brain to form memory, this set had layers of "connective tissue", particularly in the three-part stairway, which could track onto the stage from three directions, allowing access in varying degrees to the secrets beyond the hanging door.

The shadow box too incorporated various layers including scrim and rear projection material. The paintings and frames to suggest the gallery room all helped to integrate the shadow-box area. The shadow box too hung in limbo with many elements entering below via a small slip-stage.

Opening Moment of the production: Young Jane in a doorway in a shaft of red light.

After the first moment, we see the young Jane with the older Jane
together in the doorway. Note the hanging door stage right. Stairs will soon begin to join up with it.

In this scene between Jane and Mr. Rochester you can see the elements of the stairway linked up along with the slip stage.

Climactic moment in the secret room. The RP screen is removed to reveal the performers behind the scrim. This scene was later re-staged to move the action downstage of the shadow box.
